Student Certification Program
Join Our Dance Community
At KC Raqs World Dance Studio, our mission is to create well-rounded, skilled, and knowledgeable dancers. With a comprehensive curriculum aimed at all skill levels, our certification program does just that. The KC Raqs Student Certification Program will assist dancers from beginners on up in setting and achieving their dance goals and ensuring they are well-rounded at their level. Technique is emphasized, especially for newer dancers, to train and strengthen their bodies to move in new ways. No matter the experience level, students will be able to challenge themselves with the use of props, from foundational levels to advanced tricks of the trade. Dancers will grow in understanding of different styles of belly dance, the cultures and folk dances that have influenced the dance, and the fascinating history that ties it all together. Finally, students will hone their skills in musical interpretation, improvisation, and performance technique in order to put all that dance training to use on the stage. Please check out the "Events" page in order to sign up for your next class!
Level 1: Beginner's Belly Dance
Once you have completed the four-week Introductory Session, you are ready to join regular beginner's classes. Already familiar with belly dance? Contact Rahil to discuss your placement.
Level 1 students can receive a Level 1 Student Certificate by fulfilling the basic requirements (technique, combinations, props, and one musicality session). By completing all of the Level 1 sessions and performing a group choreography, Level 1 students can also receive a Level 1 Performer Certificate.
Level 2: Intermediate Belly Dance
This class is for students who have mastered the basic isolations and travel steps. As always, please contact Rahil for class placement options.
Level 2 students can receive a Level 2 Student Certificate by fulfilling the basic requirements in technique, combinations, props, and stylization. Additional specialized certifications are available at this level for those who have *already completed the Level 2 Student Certificate*: Level 2 Performer (complete all combos sessions and perform with the group), Level 2 Props (complete all props sessions), and Level 2 Style (complete all style sessions). Students at this level are able to take any Level 1 classes that interest them as well.
Level 3: Advanced Belly Dance
This class is reserved for the highest level belly dance student, whose technique and strength prepares them for challenging layers, combinations, and props. Participation in this level is corequisite to troupe membership.
Level 3 students can receive a Level 3 Student Certificate by fulfilling the basic requirements in technique, combos, props, stylization, and culture. Additional specialized certifications are available at this level for those who have *already completed the Level 3 Student Certificate*: Level 3 Performer (complete combos sessions and perform a solo at a student event), Level 3 Props (complete props sessions), Level 3 Style (complete style sessions), and Level 3 Culture (complete culture sessions). Students at this level are able to take any Level 1 or 2 classes that interest them as well.
Additionally, there are “Master” Certifications for those who complete my special sessions and workshops. That information will be coming soon!
This class is reserved for troupe members and is invitation-only. During this class, we learn choreographies and prepare for performances. Please see the student handbook for details on troupe requirements, or contact Rahil for more information.
Class numbers denote the level of experience necessary to take the class. "100s" are Level 1 and higher, "200s" are Level 2 and higher, and "300s" are for Level 3 and master students.
Remember, certification is just one of many options for students. Certification is not required in order to participate in classes and you are still welcome to drop in to classes on your own schedule. You don’t need to track any classes and if you aren’t into certification, it won’t affect 95% of your dance experience. The only thing to pay extra attention to are “prerequisites”. For some classes, especially in special topics like props and styles, you’ll need to take the fundamental classes before jumping in at higher levels. Check out the event page to see what sessions are prerequisites for upcoming classes. For a detailed curriculum map at your level, please contact Rahil at firstname.lastname@example.org.
