Journey Through Egypt with Sahra Saeeda

You’ve learned the dance (or at least you’re starting to), but what about the history? The culture? The people? Shouldn’t we know just as much about those things as the dance itself? How does knowing about the context of the dance affect our dance practice?

It makes us better dancers.

It also makes us more culturally aware, and respectful, which is never a bad thing.

Sahra Kent (a.k.a Sahra Saeeda) studied Dance Ethnology at UCLA, during which time she spent 6 years in Egypt researching and writing her master’s thesis on the zeffah, and opening doors to all kinds of knowledge. Decades later, her research continues, and she will share it with you at this event. Please note the schedule below, which will involve 20 hours of classtime (mostly lecture with some movement). Due to the nature of this course, all participants are expected to attend for the duration of the weekend. 

Friday: 2 PM to 10 PM (1 hour break for dinner)

Saturday: 10 AM to 6 PM (1 hour break for lunch)

Saturday evening (~6:30?): hafla, showcase of Egyptian dances, Sahra meet-and-greet. Bring your own dinner, order doordash, enjoy some snacks in the studio (and don't forget Rahil's birthday cake).

Sunday: 10 AM to 5 PM (1 hour break for lunch)

Cost is $250 (plus Paypal fee) for the full weekend enrollment through October 15th, at which time the price will increase to $300. Those who have taken JtE in the past can contact Rahil for a $50 discount. Contact Rahil if you wish to set up a payment plan. Refunds are available until October 15th, or until the event sells out.
